I love baseball.
I’ve been a big Toronto Blue Jays fan my whole life, but when I was a kid I admired what Cal Ripken Jr. of the rival Baltimore Orioles was doing.
In 1995, Ripken broke what was believed to be an “unbreakable record” – Lou Gehrig’s 2,130 consecutive games streak (Ripken ended up with 2,632 straight games before his steak finally ended).
If you don’t follow baseball, these numbers might not mean much … but to put it in perspective, it’s difficult to play all 162 straight games in a baseball season let alone several thousand games over many seasons (after Ripken and Gehrig, third place is way down at 1,307 games!).
I admired Ripken because he showed up to play every single day – rain or shine, whether he was feeling good or not.
You got the sense that even if he had a broken leg he would have been out on the field and ready to go.
He was the “The Iron Man”, or Mr.Consistency, and it was motivating to watch him do what he did for so many years.
Consistency is a big part of what I teach in my Natural Born Coach Program, and you can get the details for it, and the early bird discount for those who join by March 31st, here:
