I recently had a lesson hammered into me about crisis and transformation, from Jerry Maguire’s father (of all people).
You probably remember the movie Jerry Maguire, the one that starred Tom Cruise as a disillusioned sports agent who has a crisis of conscience and pens a memo about the state of his industry that gets him fired and sends him off in a new direction.
Although the infamous memo that got Jerry fired was never read in its entirety on screen, the director Cameron Crowe actually penned the memo called The Things We Think And Do Not Say (you can read it at http://www.theuncool.com/films/jerry-maguire/jerrys-mission-statement/).
I read a copy of that memo from time to time. Don’t ask me why I do that, it probably sounds weird but I find it motivating …
Anyways, I came across this quote when I was re-reading it the other day. It was something that Jerry’s father said to him:
“Every time you allow a problem in your life, you are actually at a point of transformation. Crisis is a powerful point of transformation.”
That’s what coaching is all about.
People come to you when they’re in crisis, and they want transformation.
That person that stopped by your website and requested a call? She did it for a reason. If her life was hunky dory and she was happy with everything, she wouldn’t have requested a call …
People don’t decide to talk with a coach just for the sake of it. They’re too busy for that. And it’s uncomfortable for them to talk with a stranger about their challenges.
Back to the whole “transformation thing”. Every day you have a choice to transform, to change the direction of your life.
If you choose not to, you’re not alone. The vast majority of people make that choice.
