The longer I’ve been in the coaching game, I’ve had to become more comfortable with the word “no”.
And it seems that the longer I’ve been in business, the more requests I get for favours (from complete strangers and also from people I’ve crossed paths with).
It’d be nice to have the time and energy to help every person who asked for favours, but if I did that I wouldn’t have time to build my business or give my time and energy to the clients and customers who pay me.
I feel a little bit like the former Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien, who earned the nickname “Dr.No” early in his political career.
Back in 1974 he was appointed president of the Treasury Board (the department that approved or rejected the government’s spending plans).
He had a constant stream of cabinet ministers approaching him with funding requests, but determined to get the nation’s finances under control he told them all “no”.
