Years ago, in an attempt to capitalize on the success of Donald Trump’s The Apprentice, Richard Branson launched a reality show called The Rebel Billionaire: Branson’s Quest For The Best.
It was a series where 16 people competed to become the president of Branson’s company. If you don’t remember it, you can be forgiven (not many people watched it and it was cancelled after just one season).
But I did watch it, and one scene stood out to me then. It’s been a long time since I saw it, so I’m going on my memory here:
Branson had a challenge where he asked the contestants to go down a huge waterfall with him in a barrel made by NASA.
We’re not talking about the kiddie slides at the local waterpark, this was a Niagara Falls type of drop (I think it was several times the height of Niagara Falls).
Since Branson is a risk-taker, those competing assumed that he was testing their courage and would be impressed with those who agreed take the plunge.
One of the them bravely stepped up to do it, and he got into the barrel with Branson.
At the last moment, Branson stopped everything. He said that the stunt would be certain death for them, and it was just a test.
The guy was taking a crazy risk by agreeing to do it, and Branson couldn’t trust someone like that with his company.
The whole “going down the waterfall in a barrel” thing reminds me of those online who jump into Facebook ads and try to figure it out on their own.
With Facebook making constant changes around ads, you could easily throw thousands of dollars away on them and not make one penny back from it.
